What weight cricket ball does my child need?

Ball weight is set by the grade or format, not by the child. Check with your club or association, as grades vary, but the standard weights are:

Level Weight Typically used in
Junior 133–144 g Under-13 grades, roughly Year 5 to Year 8
Women's 140–151 g Women's and girls' senior cricket
Senior 156–163 g Year 9 and above, all senior grades

This ball sits at the top of the junior range, which makes it the right choice for Year 5 through Year 8 white-ball cricket coaching, practice as well as social matches. If your child is in Year 9 or above they need a senior 156g ball.

Four-piece vs two-piece: does it matter?

Yes, for anything beyond a first season. A two-piece ball is made from two leather halves and is cheaper, but goes out of shape faster and the seam flattens. A four-piece ball uses four quarters stitched together, holds its shape through more overs, and gives a truer seam for a young bowler learning to swing it.

Before you buy: some junior grades specify a two-piece Kookaburra ball in their playing conditions. So this SG ball may not be suitable for match use with your club but can still be used for practice and coaching sessions.

Making a leather ball last

  • Wipe it down and let it dry naturally after wet play. Never dry a leather ball on a heater.
  • Keep match balls and practice balls separate. Concrete and asphalt destroy a leather ball in a session.
  • A well-kept four-piece ball will see out a full junior innings repeatedly. Once the seam has flattened and the lacquer has gone, retire it to throwdowns.

Frequently asked questions

Is 142g the right ball for an 11 year old?

Usually yes, if they are playing hard-ball cricket in an under-13 grade. The 133–144g junior weight covers roughly Year 5 to Year 8. Confirm with your club, as some grades specify a particular ball brand.

Can I use this ball for practice?

Yes, but use a separate ball for practice if you can. Throwdowns and net sessions on hard surfaces wear a leather ball far faster than match play, and you want your match ball in good shape.

How many balls should a club or school order?

Most junior teams get through more than they expect across a season. If you are ordering for a club or school, get in touch on howzzat@cricketwarehouse.co.nzΒ and we will sort volume pricing.
