How to measure correctly

Stand against a wall, heels touching it, looking straight ahead. Measure in the shoes they play in - cricket shoes add a centimetre or two, and that can be the difference between two sizes. Mark the wall at the top of the head and measure to the floor.

If you're between two sizes, take the smaller one. A bat that is slightly short is manageable. A bat that is too long pushes the hands away from the body and builds technique that takes seasons to correct.

What size cricket bat does a 10 year old need?

Most ten-year-olds use a Size 4 or Size 5, but it depends on height rather than age. A child of 144–150cm needs a Size 4; 150–157cm needs a Size 5. Measure before you buy.

Should I buy a bigger bat for my child to grow into?

No. An oversized bat forces the hands away from the body and encourages a bottom-hand grip, building habits that take seasons to correct. Buy the size that fits now. Most juniors need a new size every one to two seasons.

What is a Harrow cricket bat?

Does bat weight matter as much as size?

At adult sizes, more so. If you are between two bats of the same size, take the lighter one — bat speed matters more than mass for most players. For juniors, correct length comes first.
